Our beginning in coffee.
Our family business began with Café 54 in Perth, Australia, in 2007. Working in specialty coffee led us to learn more about the beans we served and, eventually, to roast them ourselves.
Michael travelled to the United States for professional roasting training with specialty coffee roaster and Q-grader Mané Alves. He returned to Australia and began roasting. That foundation in coffee knowledge and practical experience remains part of Essence of Coffee today.
The coffee comes first.
We source Arabica coffees from around the world and select them for their taste and quality. Each origin brings its own character to the roast.
Our blends and single origins are roasted here in the Black Hills. Taste the World gives subscribers a changing selection of roaster’s choice coffees; Genesis is our signature blend.
Essence of Coffee in South Dakota.
In November 2025, Mashed selected our Rapid City café as South Dakota’s entry in its list of the best local coffee shops in every U.S. state.
