Experience behind every roast

Our family coffee business began with Café 54 in Perth, Australia, in 2007. Working in specialty coffee led Michael Fewson to look more closely at the beans being served, how they were roasted and why some coffees produced a more distinctive cup than others.

Michael travelled to the United States for professional roasting training with Mané Alves, a specialty coffee roaster and Q Grader. He returned to Australia and began roasting coffee in his garage. By 2008, Essence of Coffee had been established.

In February 2011, we opened The Roastery in Southern River, Western Australia. The open, warehouse-style café housed our expanding roasting operation and helped establish a philosophy that became well known among customers in Perth and Rapid City: serious coffee, great food and a casual atmosphere.

That combination of professional training, practical experience and Australian coffee heritage continues to inform the coffee we roast in Rapid City today. For our business partners, it means direct access to an experienced roaster who remains personally involved in selecting, roasting and evaluating our coffee.

Coffee selected for the cup

Coffee is an agricultural product, and availability changes with harvests, seasons and supply. We select Arabica coffees for their cup quality and individual character, then adjust our roasting approach to suit the coffee rather than forcing every origin into the same profile.

We work with specialist coffee buyers and importers who source directly with farms and cooperatives. The coffees we buy are traceable to a farm or cooperative, giving us the information needed to understand where they come from and how they were produced.

Our blends are developed for consistency and a recognizable flavor profile. Our single-origin and seasonal coffees allow customers to experience the differences created by origin, variety, processing and harvest conditions.

Roasted in Rapid City

We roast in house at our Rapid City roastery and evaluate each coffee as part of the production process. Business orders are incorporated into our roasting and fulfilment schedule, with the specific ordering, collection, delivery or shipping arrangements confirmed directly for each account.

A changing coffee range, selected for your needs

We work with business customers to select coffees suited to their customers, brewing methods and everyday use. Because coffee is seasonal, individual origins and products may move in and out of the range. We will discuss the current options and recommend a practical starting point for your account.

Signature blends

Established Essence of Coffee blends for espresso, brewed coffee and retail sale.

Single origins

Origin-specific coffees chosen for individual flavor character and seasonal availability.

Decaf

A carefully selected decaffeinated option for brewing or retail sale.

E-Cups

Convenient single-serve coffee, with available varieties confirmed when discussing the account.
